USA RUGBY ANNOUNCES TEAM ROSTERS FOR FIRST CBL TOURNAMENT
Excitement is building for USA Rugby’s
inaugural City-Based 7s Tournament in Philadelphia, PA on July 26th.
Four teams will participate: Boston, New York City,
Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., and each has now announced its
tournament roster. Each team
held a try-out, followed by three practices to prepare for the
tournament.
“Players have responded enthusiastically to
this new opportunity. We
are seeing some very athletic new players, which achieves our goal
of player identification through this League” said USA Women’s 7s
Head Coach Sue Parker.
“The League could not exist without a truly great group of coaches
in each city who are following the National Team skill and game
understanding protocol.”
The City-Based League was established to
support the development of women’s 7s in the USA.
Set-up as a pilot this year, the goal is to grow the league
nationally. The program
is designed to help new players learn the basics of 7s, and to
introduce experienced players to the approach the National Team will
take. It has also been a
chance to involve new coaches in coaching 7s.
“It has been a very positive experience,” said
Mark Bowker, the coach of the New York team.
“The players have responded very well and with a lot of
enthusiasm. We have seen
improvement in ball-handling and in game awareness even over this
short period of time.”
“One of the interesting parts of the program
has been working to a consistent coaching protocol,” said Peter
Baggetta, coach of the Washington, DC team.
“Every team has been working to achieve the same outcomes.
Coaches were provided with a manual that they used to build
their practices. We
still have the freedom to do come up with our own activities, but
within the outcomes stated in the overall plan.”
The goals of the practices have been to work on
basic skills, and then introduce some attacking and defensive
concepts within the context of the game.
The tournament this weekend will be a chance for the coaches
to assess this approach.
“The tournament provides players an opportunity
to use what they have learned,” said Parker.
“We will be looking at whether players are implementing
lessons learned in practice, and we will assess whether the
protocols improved their rugby development.
The teams will be split by experience, and players will
compete at their appropriate level.”
The tournament will be held at Friendship Field
in Phoenixville, PA.
Kick-off of the first game will be at 11am, and directions can be
found at www.citybased7s.com.

ATHLETES WANTED
USA Rugby is launching a pilot program to help grow and develop
the women’s sevens game as well as add another clear pathway into
the National Team player pool. The City Based Sevens League is made
up of four cities: Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington.
These teams will be having try-outs this weekend and will then
participate in a two-week developmental program that will prepare
them for a tournament in Philadelphia on July 26th.
“The goals of the league are based around player identification and
development,” said USA Women’s National Team Sevens Coach Sue
Parker. “We encourage experienced sevens players, rugby players who
have not played sevens and even cross-over athletes that want to try
the game to participate.”
Each team will follow a portion of the National Team developmental
program that will focus on core skills and enhancing players’
understanding of sevens. Experienced sevens players, including
those who have played at elite levels, will benefit from exposure to
the National Team developmental protocols. Inexperienced sevens
players will gain a solid foundation in the game, and enhance their
understanding of the game; while athletes new to the sport will be
introduced to the game in a way that will facilitate their
development as elite rugby players.
Each team will have a try-out for players to come and make the
team. While experienced players will do well, the coaches will also
be looking for the potential of the athletes that try out.
Registration for the try-outs is required at
www.citybased7s.com.
“The City-Based Teams are not All-Star teams,” said Parker. “We are
looking for athletes who can project to international play.
Experience in sevens is great, but the coaches will also be looking
for the raw athletic potential that each player brings.”
Coaches will select a squad from the try-out and the squad will
practice for two weeks and then participate in the tournament on
July 26th.
“We want to be inclusive with the city-based teams,” Parker said.
“We want this to be an opportunity for all players who are athletic
to develop their skills and understanding of sevens. If we have
enough quality players from a city, that city may enter two teams
enter into the tournament.”
Players that are interested in participating with the city-based
teams can get more information at

6.10.09 - BOULDER, Colo. - USA Rugby is creating a Women's
Sevens League as part of the development program for sevens
players, particularly those who aspire to be Women's Sevens
National Team candidates.
Each team in the league will be located in a city, which will act as a hub to the local area, and will provide high-level Sevens experiences to the best club, college and high school rugby players in each area. Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington DC have been targeted as potential team-based cities. Other interested cities are encouraged by USA Rugby to express interest and participate.
"We must create elite environments in which players can learn sevens rugby and develop their skills," said USA Women's 7s Head Coach Sue Parker. "We are creating a pilot that allows the best athletes from all levels and backgrounds to come together to practice and play sevens."
The pilot program will start with tryouts on the weekend of July 11 and finish with a tournament on July 26 in Philadelphia. Parker will work with the coaches of each team to ensure that there is consistency in skill development and tactical awareness for each team.
"We want athletes who have never played rugby, rugby players who are new to sevens, as well as experienced sevens players. This program will be an ideal place for a rugby player to pick up 7s or for a cross-over athlete to try rugby for the first time," said Parker. "We are looking for players with speed and quickness, and an aptitude for good decision-making and ball-handling. We are going to recruit both inside and outside of the rugby community."
The teams will hold try-outs and will train for just over two weeks before the tournament. The teams will follow USA 7s National Team protocols and skill development programs, and the tournament will be an entry point for the National Team Pool. Each team will be responsible for recruiting both current rugby players as well as cross-over athletes from other sports.
Coaches that are interested in setting up a team in their city should contact Sue Parker at sparker@usarugby.org. Information regarding try-outs will be released shortly by USA Rugby.
